Abstract – Since Aristotle, running through Machiavelli, Montesquieu and Boulanger, the western and eastern political traditions was construed as an opposition between the European monarchy’s rationality and moderation, characterised by a legal system that recognises subjects’ private property, and the extra-European monarchy, built on theocratic and absolute system, ruled by a sovereign who owns power and who appears to be master of subjects’s life. On the other hand, there was thinkers (such as Postel, Hotmann, Boulliau, Sorbiere) who, getting in contact with eastern land, turned the vices of Asian empires in virtues: tyrant is able to keep an unconditional social order by the fact that he hold people’s freedom and their aspirations to live, which shall be exhausted by obedience. Tyrant became therefore wise and his reign become a role model for western monarchy.

Keywords – West and East, despotism, obedience, freedom.
