ABSTRACT – This essay explores the theme of the use of force in religious orders, starting from an interdisciplinary research project at the University of Pisa. The reflection focuses on the legitimization of the use of armed force in internal contexts, such as public security, and connects to Max Weber’s thesis on the State monopoly of force. The legitimacy of violence is analyzed both in legal systems and religious rules, where violence is often seen as a deterrent rather than direct coercion. The discussion includes biblical and Quranic examples, highlighting the contradictions and justifications of violence in the religious context.
