DI PAOLA CALONICO
ABSTRACT – This paper aims to discuss state force by examining the birth of the Metropolitan Police (1829). I will argue that in nineteenth-century England police reform served not only to prevent crime, but above all to increase the productivity of the working class. The state monopoly on the legal use of force thus played a key role in the establishment of the new social order.
